Oscar Piastri’s outstanding performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix over the weekend has cemented his place as one of the rising stars in Formula 1. The young Australian driver claimed victory in a thrilling race, showcasing his undeniable talent and marking a significant milestone in his career. This win saw Piastri become the fifth Australian driver to secure a spot on the top step of the F1 podium, but the victory didn’t come without some classic racing politics.

Starting from second on the grid behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris, Piastri quickly took the lead before the first turn of the race. By the fourth lap, he had built a gap of more than two seconds and three seconds by lap 11. As the race ensued, Norris eventually closed the gap to Piastri to around 1.5 seconds, before pitting on the 46^th lap and reemerging on scrubbed medium tyres in fourth spot. Following suit, Piastri pitted two laps later for medium tyres and returned to the track behind his teammate.

With 20 laps to go, and three seconds between the McLaren drivers, the team informed Piastri there would be a position swap between the two once he got to Norris. As Piastri seemingly struggled to close the gap, it looked doubtful Norris would hand the lead over to his teammate, despite radio orders. With just two laps to go, however, Norris slowed down, allowing Piastri to take the lead and ultimately, earn his debut Grand Prix victory, more than two seconds ahead by the end.
