Our team of travel addicts have enjoyed their fair share of drinks around the world. From peach soju in Seoul to pisco sours in Lima, our office is in constant debate on which places and venues have the best beers, cocktails, wines and liquors. With all this knowledge and boozy experience, we have used their insights to put together some of the best drinks they have experienced across the globe.
Parisian Bouquet | San Francisco, USA
Drink: Parisian Bouquet
Venue: Palmers Tavern – Fillmore Street
Recommended by: Emily – our Digital Marketing Executive.
After shopping along Fillmore Street in beautiful San Francisco visit Palmers Tavern for an afternoon happy hour (4pm – 6pm) cocktail. Highly recommend the Parisian Bouquet. This scrumptious cocktail contains gin or vodka (go the Gin for a good time), elderflower, lime, grapefruit, and basil. To get the full experience, it’s almost a requirement to enjoy this liquid gold outside in the sun people watching. Great neighbourhood vibe, casual and welcoming.
If the gin went straight to your head, continue on to Black Cat Jazz Bar in Tenderloin (yes, the infamous gritty area of San Fran) for a red wine and great live jazz music. When you enter go to the basement for the live jazz and relish in your surroundings. Be prepared to pay $20 cover, however worth every cent. For those on a budget your vantage points may be compromised however, there really isn’t a bad spot in the house and the staff are really accommodating. If you can spend the money – spend it for a swanky experience and great seats.
Guinness | Youghal, Ireland
Venue: Tynan’s bar and Off Licence
Recommended by: Robert, our Travel Consultant
Picture every movie or TV show that has the typically Irish Pub in it with a couple of locals. Well this place was just like that but only better.
Truly a local’s pub, as the front looks like an out of business bottle shop, but step through the swinging doors and you not only find a hidden gem but the best Guinness in the land. One particular night I went, (taken there by my wife’s Aunt and Uncle who know this place only too well), there were just 3 old locals having a quiet few. Having doubled the number in there, we proceeded to have a few pints and share a few tales which lead to more pints and more tales. Now if asked what these tales were I would be hard pressed to tell you as I only understood about half of what was been said but there was much laughter and fun. All in all it was a night to remember and how I have always pictured that quant local Irish Pub in a small town. Slainte!
Glühwein | Innsbruck, Austria
Venue: Local Christmas Markets in Innsbruck
Recommended by: Bonnie, our Marketing Manager
Is there anything better than a beautiful white Christmas in the mountains of Austria? The answer is yes and it’s Gluhwein. Like a big warm hug on a cold night, Gluhwein is the Austrian/German take on mulled wine. The best one I had was at one of the local christmas market stalls in the town of Innsbruck. Something about the perfect blend of fruit and spice made this drink (and the several cups after it) the best one yet. If you are heading over to Austria or Germany, this drink is a must-try to complete the winter experience.
Lychee Martini | Hong Kong
Drink: Lychee Martini
Venue: SEVAA, Hong Kong
Recommended by: Krystel, our Operation Manager
After an exhausting day of action at the Hong Kong Sevens, I recommend hitting up the very elegant SEVAA to enjoy a refreshing and lychee martini! Not only are the cocktails incredible but and admire the Hong Kong cityscape. Views overlook Hong Kong Bay and if you’re there early enjoy you can capture the brilliant sunset and evening junks cruising the harbour.
Pina Coladas | Muskoka, Canada
Drink: Pina Colada
Venue: Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ontario
Recommended by: Aimee, our Product and Operations Executive
I worked at a resort in the “Cottage Country” region of Canada, Muskoka, and we used to have the best Pina Coladas on Sunday afternoons after serving hundreds of holiday goers all week. There was something amazing about sitting by a massive & beautiful lake surrounded by the Fall colours of Canada that was magic! The drinks went down pretty darn nicely too!
Crabbies Ginger Beer | London, United Kingdom
Drink: Crabbies Ginger Beer
Venue: Any London Pub
Recommended by: Tom, Product and Operations Executive
After spending weeks in continental Europe sampling more than anyone’s fair share of beer, there was nothing better than having a nice refreshing alcoholic ginger beer on ice in one of London’s traditional pubs. Best drunk on a warm summers day in the sun, this crisp refreshing drink gave me a reprieve from the heavy lagers found throughout Europe. After a few of these though, I had enough of a break to step back into the amazing European Beer.
XXXX Gold | Brisbane, Australia
Drink: XXXX Gold
Venue: Keperra Country Golf Club
Recommended by: Dave, Team Leader Leisure
There is no better way to spend a Saturday morning than enjoying a few cold schooners of Queensland’s finest beer whilst sitting on the balcony at Keperra Country Golf Club, soaking up the sun and preparing for your round. Once you have completed this customary warmup, load up the cart with a few more Milton Mangos, head off to the 1st tee with your mates and enjoy 18 holes at one of south-east Queensland’s most picturesque courses.
Pepsi in a Bag | Cebu, Philippines
Venue: Bangka, Cebu
Recommended by: Angel, our Event Executive
Although the most simplest of drinks, I think my favourite drink has more to do with the unique experience than the drink itself. I was in beautiful Cebu in the Philippines and we were about to jump on one of those traditional Philippine boats – a Bangka – to go swimming with whale sharks. Before we jumped on, I went to a nearby local drink shack to get a Pepsi and they opened the bottle and then proceeded to serve it to me your classic shopping plastic bag – of course topping it off with a straw. I found out later they keep the bottles to get money from it, so I can see the value, but nothing makes me laugh more than looking back at myself, sitting in paradise with my plastic bag full of Pepsi. It’s those little things that make travelling so memorable.
